Ridgewood carpenter John Eisenhauer builds 59-19 Madison Street as part of a long brick row

59-19 Madison Street (tax lot 67) belongs to the row from 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street that John Eisenhauer put up in 1907-08 to plans by Louis Berger & Company. Eisenhauer (1869-1938) was born in Baden, Germany, and came to America as a boy with his family, led by his carpenter father Nicolas. The family lived in Brooklyn by 1880, John was working as a carpenter himself by 1900, and he made Ridgewood his home for the rest of his life.

“Eisenhauer built the rows at 59-22 to 59-30 Madison Street (1907) and 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street (1907-08), all designed by Louis Berger & Company.”

Filed under new-building permit 2232 of 1907, the two-story Renaissance Revival row house at 59-19 Madison Street was drawn by Louis Berger & Company for builder John Eisenhauer. Its brick front has inset brick panels under the first-floor windows, rough-cut stone bands linking lintels and sills, and corbelled header brick under a decorated frieze and cornice. By 2014 the stone hood over the door had been taken off and the door, stoop and railings replaced.
