Filed under new-building permit NB 42-1908, this two-story Renaissance Revival row house with a basement was designed by Louis Berger & Company for John Eisenhauer, its original owner. Its brick front carries a broad stone band over the basement windows, rough-cut stone banding tying the lintels to the sills, and a bracketed cornice with dentils above a decorated frieze. The bracketed stone hood over the entrance has since been removed, and glass-block sidelights and an aluminum awning have been added.

Carpenter John Eisenhauer puts up 59-27 Madison Street

John Eisenhauer (1869-1938) was born in Baden, Germany, and came to America as a child with a family headed by his father Nicolas, a carpenter. The family was in Brooklyn by 1880, and John was working as a carpenter himself by 1900; he later lived in Ridgewood. He built this house as part of a row running from 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street in 1907-08, all designed by Louis Berger & Company.

“Eisenhauer built the rows at 59-22 to 59-30 Madison Street (1907) and 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street (1907-08), all designed by Louis Berger & Company.”
