Kilian Schurger builds a curved-bay house with its original brownstone stoop

Filed in 1909 as NB 1818-1909, this two-family house was built for Kilian Schurger from plans by Louis Berger & Company. Its Renaissance Revival front has three curved bays, incised limestone lintels and continuous banded sills, and a bracketed pressed-metal cornice. The 2014 designation report found its rough-faced brownstone stoop still original, though the gate beneath it was gone and the ironwork had been replaced.

Louis Berger, architect of over 5,000 Ridgewood and Bushwick buildings, plans the house

The house's plans came from Louis Berger & Company, the firm behind most buildings in the Central Ridgewood Historic District. Berger, born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, arrived in America in 1880, studied at Pratt Institute, apprenticed with Carrere & Hastings and opened his own Bushwick office in 1895. Between 1895 and 1930 he was architect of record for more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick, and he also served as president of the Brooklyn Society of Architects.

“Berger was known to have been the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick between 1895 and 1930…”
