Architect Louis Berger plans 60-62 Catalpa Avenue for owner William Bachert

Berger, born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, came to America as a boy in 1880, studied at Pratt Institute, apprenticed with Carrere & Hastings and opened his own Bushwick office in 1895. He specialized in tenement houses and the laws that governed them, and was architect of record for more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick. His firm designed this three-story flats building, one of four Bachert built at 60-58 to 60-64 Catalpa Avenue.

“Berger was known to have been the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick…”
