Louis Berger opens his Bushwick office, later designing this flats row among 5,000 local buildings

Berger, born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, arrived in America as a child in 1880 and moved to Ridgewood in 1892. After studying at Pratt Institute and apprenticing with Carrere & Hastings, he opened his own office in Bushwick in 1895 and specialized in tenement houses and the laws governing them. Between 1895 and 1930 more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick listed him as architect of record, among them August Bauer's 1908 row on this block.

“Berger was known to have been the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick between 1895 and 1930…”

This flats building on Block 3537, Lot 32 was erected in 1908 for August Bauer under new-building application 2907, from plans by Louis Berger & Company. It has three curved bays within a four-bay front, rough-faced brick panels under the windows and a bracketed pressed-metal cornice. A metal and plastic awning and a wall lamp were later added at the entrance and the stoop was rebuilt, but the original door and cornice remain.
