In 1871 Jesse W. Powers, a builder, put up a five-story store and loft building here, hiring Thomas R. Jackson, an architect who did a great deal of work in Tribeca. The building is about 25 feet wide and 100 feet deep, and its whole front is cast iron in the Second Empire manner, with three window bays per floor and an elaborate galvanized-iron cornice. It replaced a frame dwelling and was later used for stores, offices and showrooms, with a textile firm in it when the district was designated.

“Constructed in 1871 for Jesse w. Powers, a builder, it was designed by Thomas R. Jackson, an architect who worked extensively in the Tribeca area.”
