A Federal-style row house stands here from about 1828 as one of a group of four, until the 1870 rebuilding

Around 1828 a Federal-style row house was built at this corner of West Houston Street, one of four in a group running from number 88 to 94. In 1870 it was replaced by the present four-story Italianate tenement with a commercial ground floor, designed by James L. Miller for owner Lytle W. Johnson. The new brick building has molded window lintels and a bracketed cornice with dentils.

In 1870 Laurens Street was widened by 25 feet on its west side and renamed South Fifth Avenue, and buildings along it were torn down or cut back to the new curb line. Many of the shortened lots were quickly rebuilt as tenements. The Landmarks Preservation Commission lists 88 West Houston Street among those put up that year under a new-building permit, to designs by James L. Miller.

“Some were constructed under New Building permits, such as 88 West Houston Street (1870, designed by James L. Miller)…”
