Farmer Joachim Meyerrose buys the Woodard estate land where this row was later built

Before the row houses, this block between Onderdonk and Forest Avenues was farmland. Joachim Meyerrose, a Bremen native who had settled in Newtown in 1844, bought nine acres from the Debevoise farm in 1854; ten years later he expanded by buying Woodard estate acreage on the far side of Forest Avenue, which took in the two blocks framed by Forest, Catalpa and Onderdonk Avenues and 70th Avenue. He and his sons farmed it into the late 19th century.

“Ten years later, he greatly enlarged his farm by purchasing additional land west of Forest Avenue from the Woodard estate…”
