Built in 1827 by James N. Wells as one of four matching houses, No. 94 Barrow Street was later raised to three stories. The Landmarks Preservation Commission singled out the simple iron railings of its stoop and areaway, which have graceful scrollwork in the handrails at the landings. It called them typical of the best late Federal houses. The doorway is deeply recessed and keeps some late Federal features.
“The extremely simple ironwork of the stoops and areaways displays graceful scrollwork in the handrailings at the landings, typical of the best houses of the late Federal period.”
