A rejected suitor shoots widow Laura Aster, then himself
Laura Aster, widowed in 1889, leased 126 East 10th Street in 1898 and supported herself by letting furnished rooms. Alexander Weiser, a German-born man who had lodged in the house directly behind on Stuyvesant Street, pressed her to marry him and used to come through the gate in the rear fence. At about 10 a.m. on September 16, 1899, the delivery boy who came each day got no answer at the locked door, looked through a window and saw two bodies on the floor. It appeared that Weiser had shot her in the back of the head as she cooked and then shot himself.
