Architect Martin V. B. Ferdon designed this six-story Romanesque Revival building in 1889-90 for Samuel Charles Welsh, a jewelry wholesaler whose family kept the property for many years. On the site stood a small wooden structure, with a masonry building behind it, both of which were cleared for the new loft. Welsh soon commissioned a similar building from Ferdon across the street at 186-188 Franklin Street.

“…designed by prolific architect Martin V. B. Ferdon for jewelry wholesaler Samuel Charles Welsh, whose family retained ownership of the property for many years.”
