  1. 1907

Builder Gustave X. Matheis, who put up this row, takes the name Mathews

Gustave Xavier Mathews, the developer of this house, was born in Rodalben in Germany's Palatinate in 1871 and came to New York with his parents and four brothers in 1886. He learned building from his father-in-law, Bushwick builder Louis Kuntz, and in 1907 legally changed his surname from Matheis. He worked as a builder in Queens for more than fifty years and died in 1958 at 88.

“G. X. Matheis legally changed, or “Americanized,” his name to Mathews in 1907.”

Built in 1913 to Louis Allmendinger's design under permit NB 1005-13, No. 1829 belongs to a row of seven Mathews tenements running from 1819 Madison Street to the Onderdonk Avenue corner. When the Landmarks Preservation Commission surveyed it, the house still had its paired wood-and-glass entry doors, its bluestone stoop and railing, and its areaway railing and newel posts, though some of their details had been removed.
