1860 Madison Street went up in 1911 for developer G. X. Mathews under permit NB 2318-11, designed by architect Louis Allmendinger. It is one of nine tenements, 1852 to 1868 Madison Street, lining the east side of the block between Onderdonk and Woodward Avenues, and it occupies Lot 8 of Queens tax block 3471. The Landmarks Preservation Commission describes its style as Renaissance and Romanesque Revival.

1860 Madison Street still has its wood-grained double entry doors

Number 1860 has the pale yellow brick front, amber-brick base, arched amber lintels and carved limestone doorway shared by the whole row. Its historic paired wood-and-glass entry doors keep a wood-grain finish, the basement retains wood windows with screens, and the old areaway railing and newel posts survive in part. The cornice with swags and cartouches is painted grey; the windows are aluminum replacements, a metal awning shades the entry, and the stoop has been rebuilt in brick and cast stone.

The city exhibits Mathews Model Flats, the type of 1860 Madison Street, in San Francisco

1860 Madison Street is one of the fully developed Mathews Model Flats, the improved tenement type that G. X. Mathews built across Ridgewood. In 1915 the New York City Tenement House Department exhibited the Mathews flats at the Panama-Pacific fair in San Francisco as evidence of their better design, and the type became a standard that later tenement builders followed. Between 1909 and 1912 Mathews put up and sold more than 300 such buildings in Ridgewood.

“…the “Mathews Model Flats” were exhibited by the New York City Tenement House Department at the Panama-Pacific Fair in San Francisco in 1915.”
