1862 Madison Street went up in 1911 for developer G. X. Mathews under permit NB 2318-11, designed by architect Louis Allmendinger. It is one of nine tenements, 1852 to 1868 Madison Street, lining the east side of the block between Onderdonk and Woodward Avenues, and it occupies Lot 10 of Queens tax block 3471. The Landmarks Preservation Commission describes its style as Renaissance and Romanesque Revival.

1862 Madison Street is laid out as cold-water flats, with a bathroom in every apartment
Mathews Model Flats such as 1862 Madison Street were built on lots 27.5 feet wide, with two apartments on each floor and light shafts bringing air to every room. Every apartment had a kitchen, living and dining rooms, a bedroom and a sitting room, and its own bathroom with toilet, sink and tub. The flats had running water but no hot water or central heating: tenants relied on a kerosene heater in the living room and a coal stove in the kitchen.
“…a coal stove in the kitchen and a kerosene heater in the living room were used to heat each apartment.”

1862 Madison Street keeps its wood-grained entry doors behind a newer stoop
Read more
The front of 1862 Madison Street repeats the row's pale yellow brick over an amber-brick base, with arched amber lintels, recessed brick panels and a carved limestone door surround topped by a bracketed pediment. Historic paired wood-and-glass doors with a wood-grain finish remain at the entrance, and there is still an entry under the stoop. Aluminum windows, sliding basement windows, grey paint on the stonework, a brick-and-cast-stone stoop and a new areaway railing are later changes.
