    B. Stafford Mantz turns 19 Sutton Place into a French-style townhouse

In 1921, B. Stafford Mantz, treasurer of the Corporation Trust Company, sold his East End Avenue house and bought the old brownstone at 19 Sutton Place. His makeover produced a five-story Louis XVI-style townhouse of gray and brown brick with a high mansard roof. A limestone-framed entrance and a partly gilded iron grille on the second floor completed the French look.
