This corner building, also numbered 719 Fairview Avenue, heads a row of six put up in 1911 under permit NB 601-11 for developer G. X. Mathews to designs by architect Louis Allmendinger. The district's side-street houses were built purely as homes, but this corner building had a storefront at its base, and part of the historic storefront pier and column still survives on the Woodbine Street front.

The corner flats trade a sitting room for a second bedroom because the lot has one light shaft

Mathews Model Flats normally gave each apartment five rooms, among them a sitting room and a single bedroom, plus its own bathroom, all lit from shared light shafts. On corner lots like this one the plan lost its second light shaft, so the Mathews company changed the layout and put in a second bedroom where the sitting room would have been.

“The plans of the corner buildings were modified due to the elimination of the second light shaft – adding a second bedroom instead of sitting room.”

The nine-bay Fairview Avenue facade is buff brick over an amber brick base, with carved limestone lintels, bluestone quoins, two metal fire escapes and a central entry portico under a carved limestone cornice. A one-story store extension at the rear is original. Later owners added vinyl windows, masonry infill, new storefronts and a waterfall awning.
