Plans for 2026 Gates Avenue, at the corner of Fairview Avenue, were filed in 1909 (NB 1858-09) with Louis Berger and Company as architect and G. X. Mathews as developer. The Renaissance Revival front facing Gates Avenue has four bays of buff brick, carved limestone lintels, rough-faced brown brick string courses and a cornice with swags. A remnant of the original cast-iron storefront survives, though the shop has been filled in with brick and windows.

Louis Berger, architect of more than 5,000 local buildings, signs the plans for 2026 Gates Avenue

Plans for the district's earliest buildings, lining Gates Avenue on either side, went in during 1908 and 1909 under the name of Louis Berger & Company. Born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, Berger came to America as a boy, settled in Ridgewood in 1892, studied at Pratt Institute and apprenticed with Carrere & Hastings before opening his own Bushwick office in 1895. Between then and 1930 his firm filed as architect for more than 5,000 Ridgewood and Bushwick buildings.

“Louis Berger & Co. was the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick between 1895 and 1930…”
