No. 21-13 rises with the Root and Rust row and keeps part of its first iron fence

No. 21-13 is one of five Italianate rowhouses, 21-09 through 21-17, built in 1871-72 by and for the developers Spencer Root and John Rust. It has three stories of brick above a stuccoed basement, with a pedimented doorway and a bracketed wood cornice. When the Landmarks Preservation Commission described the row in 1968, this was the house where pieces of the original iron fence around the areaway still survived.

“There are remains of the original iron areaway fence at No. 21-13.”
