Rabold & Tostevin build an Italianate brownstone row on Charles Street that includes No. 47

In 1868 James S. Bearnes, a Brooklyn grocer and liquor dealer, bought building lots on Charles Street, on its north side just past West 4th Street. The firm of Rabold & Tostevin, whose partner Peter L. P. Tostevin was a mason, put up the Italianate brownstone houses there in 1869. No. 47 was first numbered 57, and Charles Street's houses were renumbered in 1936 after Van Nest Place was renamed Charles Street.
