St. Mark's congregation sells inscribed bricks at a dollar apiece to fund a church

From 1923 the St. Mark's Episcopal congregation held its services in storefronts on 37th Avenue. To pay for a building of its own, it opened a fundraising drive in 1925 in which members could buy specially inscribed bricks for $1.00 each. The money helped build the church, which fills a landscaped site along 34th Avenue from 81st to 82nd Street, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which drew on the Jackson Heights News.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church opens with a Christmas Eve service

The cornerstone of St. Mark's was laid in June 1927, and the church held its first service on Christmas Eve that year. Robert Tappan, known mostly for groups of houses in Jackson Heights, designed it in a Modern Gothic style, with random ashlar stone walls, a steep cross-gabled slate roof and pointed-arch windows. A Parish House in a French Provincial style, with stucco walls and a hipped slate roof, was added to the north in 1948, facing 82nd Street.

“…in June, 1927, the cornerstone was laid and the church opened with a Christmas Eve service that year.”
