Developer Queensboro Corporation builds the house on a block laid out around shared open space

Robert Tappan designed this red-brick house in 1925 for the Queensboro Corporation as part of a sixteen-house group on 87th Street. The group backs onto C. L. Varrone's 1925-26 row at 34-14 to 34-50 88th Street, and the two were planned together as a single block, with landscaped open space in the block's interior. Behind the houses, garages in pairs, one for each house, are reached by a common driveway entered at either end of the blockfront.

“The group is situated back-to-back with the group at 34-14—34-50 88th Street ... the two groups together are organized on a block plan…”

Landmarks report on the new Jackson Heights Historic District finds the row's original windows mostly intact

When the Landmarks Preservation Commission described Tappan's 87th Street group for the Jackson Heights Historic District report of 1993, the houses still had most of their first windows and many original doors of wood and glass. Storm windows and storm doors had been added to many of them. The paired garages in back kept their peaked slate roofs, though they seemed to have been lengthened over the years to fit bigger cars.

“The houses retain most of the original windows and many of the original wood-and-glass doors. Storm windows and doors have been added on many houses.”
