The Jewish Center of Jackson Heights builds its synagogue on this site
An earlier building on this lot was the Jewish Center of Jackson Heights. Bloch & Hesse, a firm known for synagogue work, designed its International Style first section, completed in 1959-60. In 1968-69 the congregation added a large wing on the north side, designed by J. Stein. The brick building had a windowless four-story block facing 82nd Street, ribbon windows on its other sides, and a semicircular low wing, and the property ran through the block to a parking lot on 83rd Street.
“…the Jewish Center of Jackson Heights was constructed in two sections: the first section was built in 1959-60 to designs by Bloch & Hesse…”

The Jewish Center's old building is razed after its land goes to the Board of Education
Facing higher costs and a shrinking membership, down from more than 600 at its 1960s and 1970s peak, the Jewish Center of Jackson Heights sold the land under its 1959 building on this lot to the Board of Education, which wanted it for a new school. The center was torn down about three and a half years before February 2001. The congregation's old time capsule could not be found during the demolition. A new center was then being built at 37th Avenue and 77th Street, on the site of a former Sizzler restaurant.
