34-39 anchors one end of a six-house cluster in Tappan's 87th Street row

No. 34-39 was filed in 1925 under permit NB 127-1925 with Nos. 34-41 through 34-49, forming one of two six-house clusters that flank the middle of Robert Tappan's row for the Queensboro Corporation. These clusters run in an a-b-b-b-b-a pattern: gable-fronted houses with round-arched doors at each end and porch-fronted houses between, so each group looks like one larger building.

“Built in 1925 to designs by Robert Tappan, this group of sixteen houses is characteristic of many similar groups…”

The sixteen houses on this blockfront, completed in 1925, were Robert Tappan's first work in Jackson Heights. The landmarks report traces their simple details, among them quoins of brick, arched doorways, dormers and tall chimneys topped by chimneypots, largely to English and especially Georgian sources. Tappan went on to design a second Jackson Heights row on 88th Street in 1925-26 and double houses on 86th and 87th Streets in 1926-27.

“Tappan's first group of houses in Jackson Heights is the row on the east side of 87th Street between 34th and 35th avenues…”
