Alice Austen photographs America from her family home for some fifty years

    E. Alice Austen (1866-1952) learned to handle wooden cameras and develop plates from her grandfather and two uncles, and later inherited the house from her grandfather. From the 1880s to the 1930s she made more than 7,000 negatives, including views of Clear Comfort itself, now held by the Staten Island Historical Society. She lived here over 75 years and also helped found that society and the Garden Club.

“From the 1880s to the 1930s, working with bulky equipment, Miss Austen recorded the panorama of the American scene…”
