Stokes's middle cottage of the western trio rises in the Shingle Style

Anson Phelps Stokes contracted in 1886 for two groups of three rental houses along St. Marks Place, and this one, finished by 1887, sits at the center of the western group. It is clad in wood shingles with an angled east bay, an eyebrow dormer and a faceted slate hood. Its broad front porch, with chamfered corners at the openings, once wrapped around the east side before one bay was enclosed.

“No. 52 is the central of the western group…”

  2. 1925

A knit-goods merchant, the Camacho family and a retired realtor live here

DeFreese Critten, a commission merchant dealing in knit goods, was among the first occupants. In the early 1900s the Camacho family rented the house under Maria Camacho, a woman of independent means, with her civil-engineer son Leopold, his wife Anna, four grandchildren and servants born in Germany and Ireland. By 1925 retired real estate operator Henry W. Green lived here with his wife Mary and their children. The house is now two apartments.

“By 1925 the house was occupied by Henry W. Green, a retired real estate operator, his wife, Mary, their son, and their two daughters…”
