John Eisenhauer builds 59-29 Madison Street to a Louis Berger & Company design

The Renaissance Revival row house at 59-29 Madison Street dates from about 1908 (permit NB 42-1908), with Louis Berger & Company as architect and John Eisenhauer as first owner. It stands two stories over a basement, faced in brick with stone banding, brick spandrel panels under the first-floor windows, and corbelled header brick beneath a bracketed, denticulated cornice. The stoop and the entrance's bracketed stone hood have since been replaced or removed, and a satellite dish now sits at the roofline.

Ridgewood builder John Eisenhauer adds 59-29 Madison Street to his row

Born in Baden, Germany, John Eisenhauer (1869-1938) arrived in America as a boy with the family of his father Nicolas, a carpenter, and was in Brooklyn by 1880. By 1900 he too was a carpenter, and he made his home in Ridgewood, apparently for life. Among his rows in what is now the Central Ridgewood Historic District is 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street, built in 1907-08 from designs by Louis Berger & Company, which includes this house.

“Eisenhauer built the rows at 59-22 to 59-30 Madison Street (1907) and 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street (1907-08), all designed by Louis Berger & Company.”
