Anton Kluepfel was the original owner of this two-story-and-basement row house, built about 1907 under permit NB 506-1907 to designs by Louis Berger & Company. It still has its historic bracketed stone hood over the entrance, and its cast-iron newel posts and wood-and-glass double door may also be original. Red and white header brick corbelling runs under a decorated frieze and bracketed cornice; the windows, railings and plexiglass awning are not historic.

Former baker and sailor Anton Kluepfel builds 59-32 Madison Street

A native of Steinfeld, Germany, born in 1870, Anton Kluepfel came to America as a teenager in 1886. He worked as a baker and a sailor before becoming a builder by 1900, sometimes teaming with his brother George. In 1907 he built the row from 59-32 to 59-48 Madison Street to designs by Louis Berger & Company, and by 1910 he owned and lived in its last house, then numbered 2346 Madison Street. Kleupfel Court, a small street in the historic district, may carry the family's misspelled name.
