Louis Berger & Company gives this Kluepfel house flat, flush lintels instead of keystones

The house belongs to the 1907 row at 59-34 to 59-48 Madison Street, built by Anton Kluepfel and designed by Louis Berger & Company. The commission's report compares these rows with the houses Berger designed for Ignatz Martin in 1906, which had rough-faced, splayed window lintels topped by projecting keystones. In the 1907 rows the window lintels and stone bands are instead smooth, flat and set flush with the brick.

“All of the window lintels and stone bands in the later rows are flat, smooth, and flush.”

Anton Kluepfel builds this row house, which later loses its stone door hood and stoop

Anton Kluepfel was the original owner of this two-story-and-basement brick house, filed in 1907 as new-building permit 506 and designed by Louis Berger & Company. Since then the stoop and upper windows have been replaced, the bracketed stone hood over the door removed, and an aluminum awning and metal mesh grilles added. The wood-and-glass double door with its transom may be original, as may the basement windows.
