Ridgewood carpenter John Eisenhauer builds this house as the last of his Madison Street row

John Eisenhauer (1869-1938) was born in Baden, Germany, and came to America as a child with a family led by his father Nicolas, a carpenter; by 1880 they lived in Brooklyn. John took up his father's trade, was a carpenter by 1900, and made his home in Ridgewood. His row at 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street, put up in 1907-08 from plans by Louis Berger & Company, ends with this house.

“Eisenhauer built the rows at 59-22 to 59-30 Madison Street (1907) and 59-15 to 59-35 Madison Street (1907-08), all designed by Louis Berger & Company.”

Filed as new-building permit 42 of 1908, the brick house rises two stories over a basement. A broad stone band runs above the basement windows, recessed brick panels sit under the first-floor windows, and strips of rough-cut stone tie each flat lintel to its sill. A decorated frieze and a bracketed cornice with dentils finish the top. The stoop and front door have since been replaced and the stone hood over the entrance taken down.
