German-born builder Anton Kluepfel, once a baker and sailor, puts up the row that includes this house

A native of Steinfeld, Germany, born in 1870, Anton Kluepfel emigrated to America in 1886 as a teenager. He worked as a baker and then a sailor, and by 1900 he was a builder, sometimes partnering with his brother George. In 1907 he built the row at 59-32 to 59-48 Madison Street, and by 1910 he owned and lived in its last house, then numbered 2346 Madison Street. Kleupfel Court, a small street in the district, may have been named for the family, with the name misspelled.

Filed in 1907 as new-building permit 506 for Anton Kluepfel and designed by Louis Berger & Company, the house keeps its flat arched lintels, stone sill bands, red and white corbelled brickwork and bracketed cornice. Later owners painted the facade, removed the stone door hood, and rebuilt the entrance with a wood door, glass-block transom and sidelights, new light fixtures and a mailbox. A brick-and-metal hip wall now surrounds the areaway.
