  1. 1909

A corner store-and-flats building rises at Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane

Paul Stier built this three-story flats building of orange iron-spot brick around 1909 to anchor one end of his 23-house Catalpa Avenue row, under the same permit, NB 1379-1909, as its neighbors. A 1914 Sanborn map shows shops on both the Catalpa Avenue and 60th Lane fronts. The landmarks report says both were later taken out, with one former shop opening bricked up, and a one-story iron-spot brick garage was added on the lot between 1914 and 1936.

  2. 1910

Architect Louis Berger becomes resident architect and treasurer of Bauer & Stier

Louis Berger, born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, studied at Pratt Institute and apprenticed with Carrere & Hastings before opening his own office in Bushwick in 1895. He designed this building and was architect of record for more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick. When Paul Stier and August Bauer formed Bauer & Stier, Inc. in 1910, Berger served as both its resident architect and its secretary-treasurer.
