Plans for this six-story building went in under NB 241-1936, and it was finished in 1937 for the Walpark Bldg Co. Inc. to designs by Robert E. Golden. He dressed the beige brick with bands of orange brick, rusticated brick at the base, cast-stone trim and wrap-around corner windows, and gave the entry a cast-stone portico with stylized engaged columns. The original multi-paned steel casements, seen in a 1940s tax photo, were later replaced except for several inside the light courts.

Abraham Stillman's Walpark company develops a building much like 690 Gerard Avenue

The developer, the Walpark Building Co., was headed by Abraham Stillman, who was also president of the Gerard-153d Street Corporation that had put up the similar-looking 690 Gerard Avenue. Stillman also led the Bandes Stillman Construction Co., credited with three more nearby buildings, at 109 East 153rd Street and at 691 and 705 Gerard Avenue.

“Stillman was also the president of the Walpark Building Co., which developed this building…”
