Abraham Stillman's firm builds a Tudor Revival apartment house at River Avenue

The Bandes Stillman Construction Co. filed plans in 1930 for this six-story building at East 153rd Street and River Avenue, completed in 1931 to designs by Nathan Rotholz. It went up together with the similar buildings next door at 691 and 705 Gerard Avenue. Abraham Stillman, the company's president, also developed 690 Gerard Avenue and 711 Walton Avenue in what is now the Grand Concourse Historic District.

“This building is similar to and was built in conjunction with the adjacent buildings at 691 and 705 Gerard Avenues…”

Half-timbering, castellated towers and an oval window give the building a Tudor look

Rotholz set red and clinker brick above a fieldstone base and added touches of false half-timbering, round-arched surrounds at some second-floor windows, eyebrow dormers and castellated, tower-like forms with peaked gables at the roof. An oval window opens at the sixth floor near the south end. The original slate roof has since been replaced or covered, and the six-over-six windows seen in a 1940s tax photograph are gone.
