    G. X. Mathews builds 1858 Putnam Avenue, whose cornice is now painted tan and orange

    G. X. Mathews put up this flats building in 1911 from plans by Louis Allmendinger, one of a group of nine on the east side of the block. When the Landmarks Preservation Commission surveyed it, the historic wood-and-glass double doors, with a wood-grain finish, were still at the entry, and the cornice was painted tan and orange. A table, chairs and benches stood in the areaway. The stoop had been redone in brick, some stonework at the first floor and base was painted green, and a clothesline hung from the white-painted rear wall.
