    G. X. Mathews builds 1860 Putnam Avenue, whose bluestone stoop and areaway gate survive

Developer G. X. Mathews built this flats building in 1911 to a design by Louis Allmendinger, one of a group of nine on the east side of the block. The landmarks survey recorded its historic bluestone stoop, since resurfaced, along with the historic areaway railing, newel posts and gate and the wood-grained double doors. A tan-painted cornice with swags and cartouches crowns the facade. A metal awning now shades the entry, and the tan-painted back wall has a clothesline, with an antenna on the roof.

“…historic bluestone stoop; ... historic areaway railing, newel posts, and gate with some details removed…”
