This flats building went up in 1911 for developer G. X. Mathews, one of a group of eight Louis Allmendinger designed for the west side of Putnam Avenue between Onderdonk and Woodward avenues. Its cornice, painted light grey, still carries swags and cartouches, and the historic areaway railing survives with some details removed. Later owners installed wood-and-glass doors with a sidelight and transom, a brick-and-stone stoop and vinyl windows, and painted all of the stonework grey. The roof can be seen from the elevated M line's Forest Avenue station.
