Louis Allmendinger designs 1859 Putnam Avenue, which keeps its bluestone stoop and basement grilles

This is one of a group of eight flats buildings that Louis Allmendinger designed in 1911 for G. X. Mathews on the west side of Putnam Avenue. It kept its historic bluestone stoop, its basement window grilles and its paired front doors, now painted. Its grey-painted cornice carries swags and cartouches above the yellow brick front. Later owners put in vinyl windows and a brick stoop railing, and the tan stucco rear wall may be visible from the elevated M line at Forest Avenue.
