In 1908 the Ridgewood developer G. X. Mathews built 2033 Gates Avenue, one of eight flats from 2029 to 2043 Gates Avenue covered by permit NB 2484-08. The design, by the firm of Louis Berger and Company, is in the Renaissance Revival style. The row lines the northwest side of the avenue between Fairview and Grandview Avenues.

2033 Gates Avenue shows a cleaned buff brick front with limestone trim

The front of 2033 is five bays of buff brick with molded limestone lintels, keystones over the ground-floor openings and a bracketed limestone door surround around historic paired doors. A dark gray cornice with swags and modillions tops the facade, which has since been cleaned and repointed. Aluminum windows, a new stoop of brick and cast stone, and replacement areaway ironwork are later changes; the six-bay rear is painted grey.
