In 1868 James S. Bearnes of Brooklyn, a grocer and liquor dealer on lower Washington Street, bought much of this block front to redevelop it. He hired the mason Peter L. P. Tostevin to design Nos. 45-49. The Landmarks Preservation Commission thinks Tostevin's plans probably served for more of the block, since the firm of Daniel Rabold and Tostevin built all the houses standing there in 1869, No. 33 among them.

“…all the town houses now standing were erected by the firm of Rabold (Daniel) & Tostevin (Peter L.P.) in 1869.”
