    March

Walking-race celebrity George Noremac leases the saloon in an earlier building at 47 Prince Street

An earlier Federal-style building with a tall gambrel attic stood on this corner at Prince and Mulberry Streets. In March 1882 George D. Noremac, a Scottish long-distance walking racer known as the "King of the Peds," whose real surname was Cameron, took over the ground-floor saloon. He opened a second saloon on Eighth Avenue in 1883 and gave up the Prince Street lease in 1884.

  2. 1884

A brewery saloon, a cigar shop, a restaurant and a corner store succeed one another on the Prince and Mulberry corner

After Noremac left, the corner space in the earlier building held a Williamsburgh Brewing Co. saloon from 1884 until about 1894, then Samuel Cohen's cigar shop until 1901. Francesco Marchioni ran a restaurant there from 1901 to 1908, and Gaetano Mangano took over the lease in 1908 and probably turned it into a corner store. The shop was boarded up in 1924, and the upper floors appear to have been empty too.

Berenice Abbott photographs the vacant earlier building at Prince and Mulberry Streets

The old Federal-style building at Prince and Mulberry Streets had stood empty since 1924 when the documentary photographer Berenice Abbott photographed it about ten years later. It lasted just over a century. A replacement building was demolished before the mid-1960s, and the present building on the site, designed by Kevin Byrne Architects, was completed in 2017.
