In 1913, under permit NB 1011-13, developer G. X. Mathews put up a row of seven buildings on the east side of Putnam Avenue, numbered 1820 to 1834, with this one on the Onderdonk Avenue corner. Louis Allmendinger designed them in a Renaissance and Romanesque Revival manner, using pale yellow brick set on an amber-brick base. The Onderdonk Avenue side stretches nine bays and has a central entrance framed in carved limestone.

The 2010 Ridgewood South designation report records that the ground-floor storefronts on this building's Onderdonk Avenue side had been taken out and replaced with brick and ordinary double-hung windows. Some original fabric survived: two metal fire escapes and a pair of wood-and-glass entrance doors in the carved limestone doorway. The facade had been cleaned and repointed, and the rear wall was stuccoed cream with new window surrounds.
