The Astor estate sells the Walton Avenue blockfront where Normandie Manor will rise

In 1924 the estate of William Waldorf Astor sold the west side of Walton Avenue opposite Joyce Kilmer Park, one of the former estate parcels that were built up with apartment houses almost as soon as they came on the market near the Grand Concourse. Between 1925 and 1927 the land filled with four big apartment houses: Laurelton Manor at 923, Normandie Manor at 911, Doralton Manor at 901 and Walcourse Arms at 955 Walton Avenue.

“In 1924, for example, the blockfront on the west side of Walton Avenue, across from Joyce Kilmer Park, was sold by the estate of William Waldorf Astor…”

Built in 1925-26 under new-building permit 1725-1925, the six-story Normandie Manor was designed by Charles Kreymborg & Son for the ABSAR Realty Co. in the Renaissance Revival style. Its entry sits back inside a light court behind a rusticated limestone portico carved with griffins in bas-relief, and terra-cotta cartouches, diamond-patterned brick and a blind-arch cornice dress the upper floors. It went up together with 901 and 923 Walton Avenue, which look almost exactly like it.
