Gustave Matheis, the German-born builder behind this row, legally becomes Gustave X. Mathews

The developer of 2019 Woodbine Street was born in Rodalben in Germany's Palatinate in 1871 and came to the United States in 1886 with his parents, Xavier and Rosa Matheis, and their five sons. He learned building from his father-in-law, the Bushwick-Ridgewood builder Louis Kuntz, and Kuntz's partner John Dreher. In 1907 he legally changed his surname from Matheis to Mathews, and he kept building in Queens for more than fifty years before dying in 1958 at 88.

“G. X. Matheis legally changed, or “Americanized,” his name to Mathews in 1907.”

In 1911 builder G. X. Mathews filed plans (NB 640-11) for six Renaissance Revival flats at 2017 to 2031 Woodbine Street, drawn by architect Louis Allmendinger. No. 2019 has five bays of buff brick above an amber-brick base, a bracketed limestone hood over the door, and a cream-painted cornice trimmed with swags and cartouches. The Landmarks Preservation Commission's survey later recorded vinyl windows and a stoop rebuilt in brick and cast stone.
