  1. 1910

2036 Palmetto Street belongs to the first fully developed Mathews flats in Ridgewood

The commission singles out the houses on Palmetto Street, this one included, as the earliest examples in Ridgewood of the fully developed Mathews flats front. The company went on to reuse the design across Queens, in Ridgewood on Catalpa Avenue, Putnam Avenue and Cornelia Street, and on 48th Street in Long Island City. Its round and segmental arches of contrasting brick are drawn from the Romanesque Revival.

“…the earliest examples of fully developed Mathews flats in Ridgewood, a facade design that the Mathews company later used throughout the borough…”

  2. 1910

2036 Palmetto Street ends its row with a narrower three-bay front

Unlike the five-bay houses next door, 2036 has a three-bay buff brick front, with its doorway and carved limestone hood set in the first bay rather than the center. It shares the row's amber brick base and arches, checkerboard brick and limestone bands, buff brick panels below the first-floor windows and a cornice with swags and cartouches. By 2009 it had aluminum windows and new basement doors and screens.
