Gustave X. Mathews, a Palatinate-born immigrant, builds 2037 Palmetto Street

The builder of this row, Gustave Xavier Mathews, was born in Rodalben in Germany's Palatinate in 1871 and came to the United States in 1886 with his parents, Xavier and Rosa Matheis, and their five sons. He learned building from his father-in-law, the Bushwick-Ridgewood builder Louis Kuntz, and in 1907 legally changed his name from Matheis to Mathews. He kept developing in Queens for more than fifty years and died in 1958 at 88.

2037 Palmetto Street rises as a buff brick flats house with a carved limestone doorway

One of eight matching flats buildings on this side of the block, the house has a five-bay front of buff brick on an amber brick base. Segmental and round arches of amber brick top the upper windows, checkerboard bands of brick and limestone run across the facade, and brick pilasters rest on corbelled bases. The central door has a carved limestone frame with a bracketed, pedimented hood, and a cornice with swags and cartouches crowns the roofline.
