Dwight James Baum builds a Colonial Revival house for advertising executive William I. Kass

Dwight James Baum, a prolific Fieldston architect, designed this house, built in 1924 for William I. Kass, an executive with an outdoor advertising company. It is a brick block on a solid fieldstone base with a symmetrical front, a molded wood cornice, a slate hip roof and a prominent brick chimney. Fieldstone retaining walls hold up its sloping site.

In 1999-2000 the house was reworked for owner Daniel Orden by architect Warren Meister. The terrace, the entryway and the front were altered, and the house was extended on its east and south sides. The one-story wood-frame side wing beside the original brick block dates from 2000, and the landmarks report now classes the house as altered Colonial Revival.
