Charles Fritz and partner Joseph Barudio develop the row that includes 57-29 Catalpa Avenue

In 1913 Charles Fritz developed the lots on the northwest side of Catalpa Avenue across Onderdonk Avenue, building them in partnership with another German, Joseph Barudio. Fritz, who emigrated from Germany to Ridgewood as a boy in the late 1870s, had been working as a builder since 1895. He hired Louis Allmendinger to design the tenements, which look very much like the Mathews Model Flats.

“…those across Onderdonk Avenue on the northwest side of Catalpa Avenue, were developed by Charles Fritz in 1913. Fritz used Allmendinger to design the tenement buildings…”

When the Landmarks Preservation Commission surveyed the building for the Ridgewood South Historic District, 57-29 still had its paired wood-and-glass entrance doors and transom, wood basement windows with grilles, and its old areaway railing and newel posts. The survey also listed a non-historic stoop and railing of brick and cast stone, vinyl replacement windows in the upper openings, and a carved stone door surround painted off-white.
