Brooklyn architect Louis Allmendinger designs 57-23 Catalpa Avenue

Louis Allmendinger, who drew 57-23 for builder Charles Fritz in 1913, was born in Brooklyn in 1878, the son of a German-immigrant brewer, and studied at the Cooper Union. He designed 149 of the 167 Mathews tenements in the district. His other work includes the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord in Brooklyn and, with partner M. Allen Schlendorf, the J. Kurtz & Sons Store in Queens.

“Allmendinger (1878-1937) was born in Brooklyn to a German-immigrant beer brewer in 1878. A graduate of the Cooper Union…”

Part of a three-building permit, NB 301-13, filed by Charles Fritz, the building has a pale yellow brick front with a carved limestone door surround and a bracketed hood. Its areaway fence and gate are historic and its cornice is painted green. The facade has been cleaned and repointed, the upper windows replaced in vinyl, the stoop rebuilt in concrete, and the water table painted orange.
