Horace Ginsbern designs a red-brick Moderne apartment house at East 165th Street

Franton Estates Inc., whose president was Milton Leader, built this six-story Moderne apartment house in 1939 to plans by Horace Ginsbern. Most of the district's later buildings wear beige brick, but this one and Ginsbern's 1001 Grand Concourse stand out with red brick fronts. Wrap-around corner windows, horizontal bands with geometric brickwork in the piers, and an entrance set into a curved cove mark the design.

Horace Ginsbern, designer of hundreds of Bronx apartment houses, adds 1035 to his Concourse work

Born near Minsk and brought to the United States as a boy, Horace Ginsbern studied at Cooper Union and Columbia and ran his own firm by 1921; he changed his surname from Ginsberg around 1933. From 1924 to 1940 he laid out hundreds of Bronx apartment buildings. He took part in designing the Harlem River Houses, and with his son Frederick and partner Marvin Fine he designed the entire Chock Full O' Nuts restaurant chain.

“Ginsberg (he changed his name to Ginsbern c. 1933) was especially active in the design and layout of hundreds of apartment in the Bronx…”
