Robert Tappan designs 34-29 as one of four houses at the center of a Queensboro row

The Queensboro Corporation put up this red-brick house in 1925, one of sixteen that Robert Tappan designed for this blockfront of 87th Street, from 34th to 35th Avenue. One permit, NB 126-1925, covered it along with Nos. 34-27, 34-33 and 34-35, the four houses that form the middle cluster of the row. In that cluster each two houses share a projecting gabled front holding both of their doorways, which are arched and topped by fanlights.

“Built in 1925 to designs by Robert Tappan, this group of sixteen houses is characteristic of many similar groups…”

Tappan's first Jackson Heights houses rise on this blockfront of 87th Street

This row, finished in 1925, was the first group Robert Tappan designed in Jackson Heights: sixteen brick houses with pitched roofs, gathered in clusters of different sizes and with details drawn largely from English, and especially Georgian, models. The following year C.L. Varrone designed the houses behind it on 88th Street, copying Tappan's scheme but adding Spanish-tile roofs. The landmarks report calls the resulting block, with garages and a car lane in its interior, typical of the Queensboro Corporation at its best.

“Tappan's first group of houses in Jackson Heights is the row on the east side of 87th Street between 34th and 35th avenues…”
